Role of Code Switching in Second Language Acquisition in Higher Educational Sphere of Bangladesh

Abstract

The primary aim of the research is to locate the attitudes of Bangladeshi students towards switching language from their mother tongue to a second language, i.e. - Bengali to English in their daily communication. This subject matter of Bengali-English code-switching has been the center of some researches in Bangladesh quite recently; therefore, researches in this field are in the development stage and are highly relevant. The study investigated some Bengali-speaking students of higher educational institutions of Bangladesh. The results have revealed that the attitudes of students towards Bengali-English code switching were positive and constructive in general. It is demonstrated that code-switching facilitates second language acquisition in the educational spaces. The research also found out that this new style of language is considered as a threat to the mother tongue as well. It suggested that speakers should learn or be taught to use both languages correctly. Finally, it provided some recommendations for the students to facilitate the learning of Bengali and English languages properly.
